About Eddie Stern

Eddie Stern is a globally well-known Senior Certified Ashtanga Yoga teacher, author, and lecturer based in New York and is widely known as the pioneer of New York’s yoga scene.

Eddie is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Ashtanga Yoga. His approach combines the ancient philosophy and practices of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that make yoga work. He studied Ashtanga Yoga under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from 1991 until his passing in 2009, and continues to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’s grandson, Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois. Eddie has taught the virtues of the practice to far too many celebrities to mention entirely. His most famous celebrity students are Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin, Willem Dafoe, Mike D., Julian Schnabel and Russell Brand among others and has a dedicated following of practitioners in New York and around the world. When he is not teaching in New York, he travels the world extensively sharing his insights and passion.

Eddie is the co-founder of Brooklyn Yoga Club, Ashtanga Yoga New York, Broome Street Temple, Namarupa Magazine, the Urban Yogis, and Set/Reset.

Eddie Stern’s journey into the practice began in the late 80's when he was introduced to yoga, meditation and vegetarianism by a co-worker at Bleecker Bob’s records in NYC. He quit smoking when he was 18 (smoking 2 packs a day !) and dedicated his life to yoga. From his early 20's, Eddie studied Ashtanga Yoga, chanting, philosophy and rituals in Mysore every year.

Eddie has published several books on Ashtanga yoga, including Yoga Mala and On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace. This year he is promoting his forthcoming book One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life.
In addition to being a master of the asana practice, Eddie is transforming society as co-founder of the Urban Yogis Project along with Deepak Chopra, a gun- and harm reduction program in Queens, New York; Set/Reset, a public education health and wellness non-profit; and most recently, The Breathing App, a free app that teaches resonance breathing for stress and anxiety reduction.

Stern is a major advocate of spreading yoga broadly and works tirelessly to bring yoga to at-risk youth.

Eddie has studied Sanskrit and many of the scriptures of the Indian tradition as well as all aspects of the Indian and yogic culture. Stern is a scholar and avid devotee of the Hindu tradition. He opened the Broome Street Temple in New York City in 2001 with his wife and fellow Ashtanga yoga teacher Jocelyne Stern, which was the first and only Vedically consecrated Ganesha temple in Manhattan, and which also housed their Ashtanga yoga school for 15 years. He opened the first branch of his yoga school in NYC in 1993, which operated until this past March, 2019, at its final location in Brooklyn. Now he teaches one week per month in NYC, and travels to teach as well. Known for his authenticity, dedication, philosophical wisdom and skilful guidance, Eddie is the embodiment of Ashtanga yoga on and off the mat. Eddie is humble, full of heart, intellect, and humour.

Eddie is one of the most extraordinary teachers of Astanga Yoga in the world today and this workshop is an amazing opportunity to learn from him the true and pure essence of this uniquely comprehensive system of yoga and learn about his ideas on science, philosophy and physiology related to yoga and its practices today.

Eddie lives in New York with his wife Jocelyne.

Workshop Topics

Led Primary Series

Practice on 7th December Saturday and 9th December Sunday

The primary series is a challenging and invigorating sequence of postures that take about an hour and thirty minutes to practice. The postures are strengthening, toning and cleansing for the muscles, joints and internal organs. Variations of poses that prove challenging will be offered. This class includes postures, breathing, pranayama, and chanting. Previous yoga experience is suggested for this class.

The primary series of Ashtanga Yoga is a sequence of thirty-two yoga postures that are excellent for strengthening and stretching every limb of your body, massaging the internal organs (especially the organs of digestion), and activating the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, which is related to our need to be able to “rest and digest”.

Suitable for those with yoga experience

Mysore Practice

Practice on 5th December Thursday and 6th December Friday

Mysore practice is appropriate for beginners as well as students of all levels, and is the traditional method of learning yoga, one-on-one from teacher to student. However for this two session only we ask you to be already familiar with the Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Style of practice. If in doubt, please contact us via email prior to registering.

Lecture 1 : Stress, Resilience, and Inflammation

Part 1 - 7th December Morning & Part 2 - 7th December Afternoon

Burn-out, anxiety, stress, and depression are some of the most common side-effects of the fast-paced, high demand society that we live in today. We have all experienced them to some degree, and they all have one thing in common: inflammation. Inflammation, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. It fights off viruses and is a regulator of certain bodily functions - but too much of it causes us to break down. It is the leading cause of 95% of all preventable diseases, including cardiovascular disease and irritable bowel syndrome. The good news, however, is that inflammation has certain on and off switches that are not difficult to access, and when we know the tricks to switch the inflammation off, we tap into our inner keys to self regulation. By learning that we are not at the mercy of stress and the other exhausting side-effects of modern society, we can restore our energy, our sense of purpose and meaning, and express our creativity fully through the work we do and lives we live.

In this two part lecture, Eddie will discuss what stress is, how it leads to inflammation of both body and mind, and how through change of perception we can turn our negative stressors into positive challenges that we can grow from.

Therapeutics Class : Yoga Therapy Class

7th December 2019 Afternoon

In the one hour yoga therapy class Eddie will lead us through a simple yoga practice for down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system and follow themes from the morning nervous system talk.

Lecture 2 : Correlation between Eastern and Western views of the nervous system

7th December 2019 Afternoon

One Hour Lecture Post the yoga therapy class on Correlates between eastern and western views of the nervous system

Yoga, Nadis, and the Nervous System
In this lecture we will examine some of the correlates between the Yogic and Western views of the nervous system. One of the earliest references of Yoga in the Upanishads states that the purpose of yoga is to steady the sense organs in order to move awareness inwards towards Self-knowledge. Control of the sense organs is a consistent theme in yoga, and we know from Western science that the sense organs are an integral part of the nervous system. The sensory nerves are also closely linked with one of the most ancient nerves in our body, called the vagus nerve, which when toned is associated with improved cardiac health, lower levels of inflammation and anxiety, as well as several other benefits. The practices of Ashtanga Yoga directly impact the health and function of the vagus nerve, as well as help to balance the branches of the autonomic nervous system. We’ll discuss how yoga, from the perspective of Western science, is a perfect practice for maintaining health, restoring balance, improving our ability to listen and communicate well with others, and find a sense of peace within ourselves.

8th December Morning

Feel free to bring your questions about yoga, philosophy, asana, poses that are troubling you, and Eddie will answer them. While we will not have time to address everyone’s particular problems, we can look at general alternative positions with respect to queries/poses that could be helpful for everyone to know.

Lecture 3 : One Simple Thing - How Yoga Works

8th December 2019 Afternoon

In this two hour lecture, Eddie will discuss some of the underlying mechanisms of yoga that make it an effective practice for self-regulation, emotional regulation, and spiritual experience. Drawing from his book, One Simple Thing, he will discuss a variety of scientific findings and yogic explanations that complement both an Eastern and Western approach to spiritual practice. Even after thousands of years, yoga continues to be an infinitely interesting and exciting practice and philosophy, never growing old, and always staying new. In this class, we will look at some of the reasons why this is so.

Books of of Eddie’s new book, One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life will be available for purchase at the workshop. Receive your signed copy of this must read book.

Stand Alone /Add on Workshop: Ashtanga for Beginners

4th December 2019 Evening

If you have heard about Ashtanga Yoga, but think that it sounds too hard or tiring, or you have wanted to try it but feel intimidated, then this class will give you an easy going introduction to some of the poses, breathing, and philosophy behind this practice. We will talk about the techniques used in yoga, the philosophy behind the practice, the original meanings of the word vinyasa, and practice some of the poses from the primary series. It will be part discussion, and part practice. We’ll cover modifications of poses that are difficult, or that allow for practice if you have any injuries that you are being wary of.

We will also save time for questions, tips on how to start and maintain a practice, or anything else that is on your mind.

Ashtanga Yoga is a cohesive, structured practice of yoga that is meant to be internalised, meaning, once you learn it, it is yours forever, to practice wherever you are, on your own.

Yoga seeks to make us autonomous beings; structure is supposed to lead to freedom. We will discuss, and hopefully experience these things, in this class.
